Assignments
Homework Assignments
Arabic 1 is a college-level transfer course. To succeed, you will need college-level reading, writing, listening, speaking, and note-taking skills. This course is worth five (5) units. Therefore, the assignments are appropriate for a 5-unit course. To keep up and do well in class, you must plan on studying between 12 and 15 hours a week outside of class.
Written and Oral Assignments (0.5%)
These consist of the assigned material, such as exercises from the book, mini-oral presentations, handouts, etc. Homework will be collected and checked. Failure to thoroughly complete any assignment on time will result in a lower course grade. I will not give credit for late homework assignments.
Tests (30%) and Quizzes (10%)
There will be three regular tests using Proctorio. You will have 24 hours to complete the timed tests and quizzes on Canvas. Quizzes may cover any area studied up to that day. I will evaluate spelling, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression.
There are NO MAKE-UP tests or quizzes. The next test or quiz you take* counts double.
If you are having trouble with your personal computer/camera to take a test or quiz, go to the language lab at Saddleback College. Check out the lab's website for their hours of operation.
*test scores double for test scores, quiz scores double for quiz scores. A test score will never replace a missed quiz score, and vice versa
Oral Presentations (15 %)
I will formally evaluate and grade your speaking skills twice during the semester. The first oral presentation will take place before you take your second test and is graded as part of that test. The second oral presentation will be towards the end of the semester; your oral proficiency in Arabic will be evaluated based on a personal interview and/or a prepared dialogue or group skit. Details will be announced further along in the semester.
End-of-Class Essay (10 %)
The essay will be scheduled for the end of the semester. I will evaluate spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate use of the MSA. Details will be announced further along in the semester.
Final Exam (20 %)
This exam is cumulative; it will emphasize the most important skills, tasks, and structures practiced in the Arabic 1 class.
Participation (10 %)
Class participation is a vital part of your language learning experience. You belong to a more advanced Arabic class if you do not need to attend and complete assignments to pass the chapter exams. I will assess your participation through the weekly tasks. These tasks will include short answers and multiple-choice questions.
